What Is Pepper Spray?
Pepper Spray is a chemical compound that irritates the eyes, causing a burning sensation, pain and temporary blindness by diluting the eyes’ capillaries and inflaming mucous membranes in the nose, throat and lungs resulting in breathing difficulties. The effects of Pepper Spray can last up to 24 hours although vision is generally restored within 15-45 minutes and it causes no permanent damage.
Pepper Spray is made with Major Capsaicinoids which is the rue heat measure, and 2,000,000 SHU’s of raw pepper. Safe and Secure Products offers our Pepper Spray in two strengths with our Pepper Shot Pepper Spray, made with 1.2% Major Capsaicinoids and our Wildfire brand Pepper Spray made with 1.4% Major Capsaicinoids. Either strength will be effective in bringing an assailant to his or her knees and allow you the opportunity to escape a dangerous encounter.
Pepper Spray Tips
Understanding the following tips on Pepper Spray and its proper use is the best way to ensure your safety without having to be concerned with the life of another. Our Pepper Spray is effective enough to bring an assailant to his or her knees without resulting in death or serious damage. For this reason, Pepper Spray is one of the most popular means of self-defense. Safe and Secure Products offers a variety of different Pepper Spray products which include units in Leatherette Holsters with quick release keychains, leather belt clips, sun visor clips for your car and even Pepper Spray disguised as a stylish lip stick tube which is a lady’s favorite.
- Become Familiar with Your Pepper Spray Device
Familiarize yourself with the safety lock if your unit has one and know how to move it to the armed position. Keep your Pepper Spray at a location easy to access should you need it with little or no warning. While it should be kept where it is easily accessible to you, be sure to keep it from the reach of children. Practice holding it, aiming it and accessing it from where you carry it.
- Holding and Using Your Pepper Spray Correctly
As with any weapon, there are right ways and wrong ways of holding and implementing use of your Pepper Spray. While your first inclination may be to hold your Pepper spray directly in front of you with your arm completely outstretched, this is not the best way. The best way in use of your Pepper Spray is to hold your free hand out in front of you flat as in the form of a “stop” sign. With the hand holding the Pepper Spray, bend your elbow slightly with the canister in alignment with your nose.
The attacker will be distracted by your open hand which will provide you the opportunity to use your Pepper Spray. Aiming at their face, spray in a zig-zag motion creating a “Z” style pattern which will give you the best shot at hitting their eyes in the event they’re moving. At the same time shout or scream as loudly as possible to create more chaos and hopefully elicit help from others in the vicinity.
Upon hitting your attacker in the eyes, the threat should be halted and the attacker may even be brought to his or her knees which should afford you the opportunity to run and escape from the attack. Remember that defensive sprays are designed to give you the opportunity to escape a threatening situation, not to fully and completely neutralize your attacker. The threat will be lowered but not necessarily eliminated.
- Be Aware of Weather Conditions
One concern you will have with Pepper Spray is the possibility of feeling the effects of it yourself, particularly should you have to put it to use in windy conditions. Two things you will have no control over when you may be faced with the risk of an attack, and the weather so you should just be aware of your surroundings and the conditions.
Be sure to follow these tips for your protection and safety. You never know when you may sustain an attack, but you do know how to safely and effectively use your Pepper Spray to escape one.
